Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

physician assistant, medical aesthetician

WHAT IS A PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT?

Physician Assistants (PA) are academically prepared and highly skilled health care professionals who provide a broad range of medical services. PAs are physician extenders and work with a degree of autonomy, negotiated and agreed on by the supervising physician(s) and the PA. PAs can work in any clinical setting to extend physician services. PAs complement existing services and aid in improving patient access to health care.

WHAT LASER DO YOU USE AND IS IT SAFE FOR DARKER SKIN TYPES?

The Nd:YAG laser can be used to address a wide variety of skin concerns. It is effective for laser hair removal, treatment of spider veins, hyperpigmentation, and skin rejuvenation. It is safe and effective for darker skin types.

IS MICRONEEDLING SAFE FOR DARKER SKIN TYPES?

Yes! Pigmentation is primarily an epidermis issue. Microneedling causes a healing cascade in the dermis (below the epidermis/ area of pigment) causing cell turnover, lightening areas of undesired pigment.

In fact, darker skin types may have exceptional responses to this treatment as melanin acts as a photo-stabilizer of collagen, further supporting the collagen induction therapy provided by microneedling.

PRE AND POST CARE INSTRUCTIONS

Pre Care

24 hours before your treatment, discontinue products containing any exfoliating agents. For example:

  • Retinoic acid
  • Tretinoin
  •  Retinol
  • Benzoyl peroxide
  • Glycolic acids
  • Salicylic acid
  • Stringents

If you have a history of herpes or cold sores, consider a course of antiviral medication prior to your treatment. This will prevent an outbreak of cold sores if you are prone to them. Cold sores can also occur for people who are not prone to them, but who have sensitive skin.

When possible, please avoid wearing makeup and/or jewellery to your appointment.

Post Care

  • DAY 1

o   Do absolutely nothing to the skin if possible.

o   Alternatively, 30 minutes post treatment use lukewarm water only and pat dry with a fresh, clean towel.

o   For the first 24 hours apply Lift HG as needed until the tube is completed.

o   Redness and/or swelling is common and will resolve within 1-2 days.

o   AVOID:

-  Clothing, headbands, hats, or scarves on the treated area for 48 hours after treatment.

-  Sun, heat, saunas/hot tubs, exercise/sweating, and extreme temperature for 7 days.

-  Using an electric or manual facial cleansing brush of any kind (e.g., Clarisonic) for 7 days.

-  Picking, peeling, rubbing, scrubbing, or irritating your skin in any way while it is healing, as this may cause scarring.

  • DAY 2

o   Use lukewarm water only and pat dry with a fresh, clean towel.

o   Apply Rescue Calming Complex as needed until the tube is completed.

o   Mineral make-up may be worn; however, recommend leaving skin clear if possible.

  • DAY 3-6

o   You may resume using a gentle cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen as your daily/nightly routine.

o   Bruising, pinpoint bleeding, minor scabbing, minor breakouts, swelling and/or redness may occur and will resolve within 7-10 days of treatment.

  • Notify Jamie (416.300.0027) of any concerns (blistering, excessive redness/swelling, etc.)

Pre Care

  • Unfortunately you cannot receive a chemical peel if:
  • You are on chemotherapy, type 2 Diabetes or lupus medications
  • Have a serious medical condition.
  • Are pregnant or lactating.
  • Are allergic to Aspirin.
  • On Accutane medication.
  • Have sun-damaged skin, cold sores or rashes.

Limit sun exposure for 2 weeks prior to treatment.

Post Care

For best results please follow these instructions:

  • Avoid touching the treatment area. If required, wash hands immediately prior to touching the treatment area.
  • Consult with a physician within 24 hours if any signs of infection develop following the procedure.
  • Make up can be applied 15 minutes post treatment. Ensure brushes are clean.

• For two days post procedure:

  • Avoid direct sun exposure.
  • Stay as cool as possible. Overheating internally can cause hyperpigmentation.
  • Do not put the treated area directly into a hot shower spray.
  • Do not use hot tubs, steam rooms, or saunas.
  • Do not go swimming.
  • Do not participate in activities that would cause excessive perspiration.
  • Do not use loofahs or other means of mechanical exfoliation.
  • Do not direct a hair dryer onto the treated area.
  • Do not apply ice or ice water to the treated area.
  • Moisturizer should be applied at least twice daily.
  • Wear a minimum SPF 30 daily indefinitely. Do not go to a tanning bed for at least 2 weeks post procedure.
  • Avoid Active Topicals (such as AHAs, tretinoin etc.) 7 days post treatment as they may cause irritation.
  • Light flaking for several days is normal. Avoid picking or pulling on any loosening or peeling skin. This could potentially cause hyperpigmentation, increased risk of skin cancer and signs of aging. If no peeling occurs, this does not mean the treatment was less efficacious.
  • Do not have another treatment until your clinician advises you to do so.
  • Notify Jamie (416.300.0027) of any concerns (blistering, excessive redness/swelling, etc.)
